Remington electric chain saw RM1632A : The Lighter chain saw

Electric chainsaws dare better than gas-powered ones because of several reasons. One reason would be that electric chainsaws work faster thus saving you a lot of time in cutting down things. It is also more efficient and more reliable. Plus, it is a lot more environmentally-friendly. It does not contribute to air pollution and it does not make use of one of the most valuable resource in the world today, oil. It is also a lot quieter. No more annoying shrieks from your neighbors about the noise you are making. The electric chainsaws is an advocate against sound pollution.

One of the problems encountered by those who use electric chain saws often is the back pain and stress they get from carrying it for a long time. It is just too heavy for being convenient. You could fell trees of a substantial amount and feel accomplished, but your pained back would say otherwise. There are a lot of advantages of using an electric chainsaw, but this is one disadvantage. Luckily, the Remington electric chain saw can look past that problem.

The Remington 16 electric chain saw has dimensions of 32.4 x 9.8 x 8.8 inches, weighs 9 lbs, and offers a variety of useful features. It is one of the best electric chain saws in the market today since it could overlook the weight problem.

At only 9 pounds, the Remington electric chain saw compares greatly to other chain saws in terms of weight. With this, back pain could be reduced and hours could be increased using it. Consumers who constantly ramble about the heaviness of a chainsaw would be genuinely happy with the Remington electric chain saw.

Another feature of this incredible chain saw would be its cutting speed. It is ideal for fast and easy trimming, pruning, firewood-cutting, tree-felling and a lot more. Combined with its lightness and its power of 3 HP, it is a light and easy-to-handle wonder in the chain saw business. It isn’t behind on safety, either. There are front and rear hand guards for the purpose of operator protection, a trigger lock-out, and a 16-inch reduced kickback guide bar and chain. It has a push button oiler for manual oiling. It also has an external adjustment screw for chain tensioning and steel bucking teeth for better leverage and control. The Remington electric chain saw comes fully assembled with a one-year warranty.
You could find this feature-packed, lightweight product in online stores and malls near you. . more info

I live in an area where I’d have to lug gasoline up 70 steps, so decided to try an electric chainsaw to help me keep some of my trees under control. I was happy about how light the Remington saw was, but immediately ran into problems.

The oil started leaking on everything, and the tensioning mechanism was very difficult to re-align after cleaning under the housing. After a few uses in which I cut only small (4″) branches into firewood, the center bushing wore out and the saw blade would no longer stay in its track. So I ordered a replacement bushing, and managed to cut portions of a dead tree down (up to 8″ diameter) before the saw stopped working altogether.

So I took apart the trigger mechanism, and re-assembled it, hoping maybe a spring has just been jarred loose. I also cleaned under the housing. Then came the nightmare of trying to re-tension the blade. Upon closer observation, I realized the tensioning mechanism relied on the plastic housing to maintain the blade tension, so was essentially designed to fail. With all my strength, I couldn’t get it tight enough to keep the blade on, and was quickly stripping the head on the tensioning screw, and not getting any more tension.

So, now, after less than a full season of use, the Remington electric chainsaw is just more trash in the landfill. What a waste!

When this worked, it worked well. However the second the chain gets loose, it’s very hard to tighten in correctly. Also, the oil gets everywhere! And you have to make sure to use a heavy duty cord or a light weight one will burn out the motor (found out the hard way!). I spent way too much time trying to get it to work than actually having it work. I ended up finding the handsaw to be easier than taking the time to fix and clean this.

I was surprised when I used this saw. It has amazing power for an electric chain saw. Very smooth operation and cuts easily. I wish it had an automatic chain oiling system rather than manual but otherwise this is a great saw for the money!

I’ve had this saw for a year and a half and have had no problems with it besides the annoying gravity oiler. It is true in other reviews that it leaks oil when left to sit, and does not oil enough when in use. Simple fix, though: bring an oil dripper with you and lube up the chain every now and then, and empty out the oil reservoir when you arent using it. The blade tensioner works fine for me; there is a screw at the end of the drive housing it pulls a tab that fits into the blade and you secure it down with the locknut. Once you notice how it works and use it correctly, it works fine. Also, beware of the tab that holds down the drive housing. It is difficult to notice when you are trying to take off the side housing and must be put in first before reassembling the housing.

As far as performance, I have cut 16″ trees (a little slowly) but just fine. For normal around the house work with 10″ and smaller branches, it is superb, and has enough power. Sure it is not as fast and powerful as a gas chainsaw, but it is so convenient, easy to use, and simple that I would never consider a gas unit unless I am far out into the woods and need to cut many large trees on a regular basis. For the average home user, a gas chainsaw is a waste of money ($300-ish) vs $50 for this guy, and you have to keep gas and oil ready, and deal with starting it. Sure, I wish this chainsaw was a little better made, but if I was really concerned with a high quality chainsaw, I would have spent more. I realized what I was getting into with a cheap chainsaw. I think most people’s problem with this is they are expecting too much for what they paid. (with the exception of the ones who have had a motor burn out– that is unacceptable at any price).

I was pleasantly surprised at just how well this cutter worked, especially considering it’s reasonable price compared to a gas driven chainsaw. It had no trouble cutting through a 6″ citrus tree stump and other large limbs that I was afraid it might not cut. Sure beats a handsaw!!

I have had this chainsaw for over 2 years now, and it definitely is headed to the trash heap. It worked well in its first 4 months, and even now, this 16-inch electric has a the horsepower for the homeowner’s needs. But as others have commented, this Remington leaks oil. And in the past 10 months, the chain will jump off the guide every 30 minutes, which makes for a lot of wasted minutes. I do not recommend this electric chainsaw at all.

Work great … except for the oiler.
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I thought there may have been something wrong with the oiler until I read all of the other reviews that state the same thing. You have to keep oiling the chain with an oil can because the silly pump oiler, which is just a rubber bulb, does not put any pressure on the oil and it just kind of sits there. I cut for about 6 hours and did not use any oil out of the oil reservoir. The saw itself, however, works great. I don’t see any problem with the way the chain tightens or the cover fits or anything else. It all works fine and looks right to me. You just have to think a little about what fits where. The saw has a lot of power and zips through wood like a champ. I used it and abused it and so far it has held up fine. I just hate having to oil the chain every time I start a new log. I would not buy another one just for that reason. In fact, I am still thinking about taking it back, if I can get by with it.

This saw is too heavy and too powerful to use for carpentry which is why I purchased it. It is great for cutting up firewood though. The drawback that I have encountered is the manual oiling system. Some reviewers say they get too much oil; I don’t get enough. During one use I had to pump it more than 100 times to get oil on the chain!

    BUY THE POULAN INSTEAD!
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I always assumed that an electric chain saw would be a wimpy alternative to a “real” chain saw. I stand corrected. This saw cuts wood like butter. It has the convenience of being able to start and stop it repeatedly. Even if your woodlot is too far from an electric source to be your primary saw, it would make a great saw in the woodshed.

For most suburban homeowners, electric is really the way to go.

I’ve read other reviews here, (wish I had done that first!) and will probably give the much better reviewed Poulan a try.

The bottom line though is don’t turn your nose up to the concept of electric vs. gas.

UPDATE: This saw is impossible to keep tensioned because of the faulty design of the tensioner screw, which is a weak piece of pot metal that bends upon tightening, making the chain slack.

I replaced it with the 18″ Poulan and the difference is like night and day!

FYI, if you must buy the Remington, the oil problem mentioned in other reviews can be minimized by draining the oil reservoir after each use, but really, buy the Poulan!

    SUPRISING POWER
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this saw in Jan. 08 to help clean up ice storm damage. I was surprised at the power it has. It can cut the full 16″ length of the bar and not bog down. I am cutting red, white and black oak and hickory both green and seasoned and it has no problem. The chain wears less then my gas saws.

It would help to have a shock mounted handle when in hard dry wood, and it badly NEEDS and automatic oiler. Mine is very slow to oil the chain and bar. It leaks when not cutting, but flow is too slow when cutting. The auto oiler is only a few $ and can be added by cutting the oil line and inserting it between the tank and the outlet to the chain. The housing is the same as the automatic version.

I would recommend this unit for nonprofessional home use. I have found that if the chain gets too loose it will “through” it off. I have not found it to be all that difficult to adjust or to reinstall. I would spend the extra money and get the automatic oil model if I were doing it again, but since I have this one, I am going to add the auto oiler and call it good.

I do use a heavy cord on it up to the last 6′ which is either a 14 or 16 gauge cord. The other 90′ is composed of a 10 and 12 gauge with the 10 gauge plugged into the source. No problems with over heating or any other motor problems. All electric tools need a cord matched to the amp load they draw.

You get what you pay for. The saw does work when you can keep the blade on and if you keep spraying oil on the chain. The manual Oil-er which is just a rubber button does not work. The chain works itself loose after about an hour of use.

I am deeply disappointed with the saw. Had one from another brand that lasted a good 10 years. The Remington could not celebrate it’s first birthday. In addition to the already documented shortcomings in other reviews, I experienced overheating of one of the bearings. Since there is no overheat protection, the part of the case that holds the bearing melted. I took the unit apart to see if there was anyway to repair it. Found out that it is all made out of plastic. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for. Save your money and buy a good handsaw, or look deep in your pockets for some extra change and buy a chainsaw that will last.

It died today. The motor burned out! Leaks oil continuously by design. Very, very noisy. Too bad it apparently did not have a 50 cent thermal overload switch to prevent it from burning up

I bought this saw several years ago and it did okay for about a year, then, all of a sudden, the motor burned up! I had used it very little and was rather surprised since I take good care of my stuff. I decided that since the bar and chain were still in excellent shape I would buy another one. What a mistake!! After cutting less than 1/2 cord of wood the motor burned up! Needless to say, I won’t be getting another one!!

I have no idea what the chain saw is like. I have not used it. It is a gift for one which I burnt up trying to saw a tree…The blade was caught in an undercut and I tried to get it loose, but wound up burning up. This mearly was a replacement. This may not be the type of survey you will want the masses to read. :)

I don’t know how one could mess up tightening this chain. It’s a rather easy mechanism that I actually like. I’ve also not had the oil leakage problems. Nor have I seen that you have to drain the oil after each use. I’ve used several much more expensive and much higher quality gas chain saws, but for the price, I think this one is a great performer.
