I really like this cordless chainsaw for my small yard. Recently I had to clear the bushes away from my house so the painter could have access. The painter indicated he could have the bushes cleared out for about 4 times the price of the Black and Decker cordless chainsaw so I bought the B&D cordless instead and did it myself.

I plan on using it about a 1 hour per year so the included battery and charger should be fine.

One thing I did notice is that the chain oiler needs less than 30w oil as called out for in the instructions. With 30w oil, it would not apply oil to the chain. I used some Husqvarna chain saw oil and it would not dispense oil onto the chain either. Instead, I used 3-in-one oil. This worked perfectly. I also tried some 5w-30 motor oil in an external hand oiler and that worked good also but is somewhat inconvenient. If you keep the oil in the chain oil reservoir to 5w or so, you shouldn’t have a problem.

It’s important to keep the chain oiled as the chain wears out much more quickly if it’s left dry.

I would recommend that you try different weight oils for the chain oiler to determine what best works for you.

We recently purchased this through Amazon. The chain saw leaks oil terribly – it’s awful. Plus, it was missing the needed Allen wrench tool that was supposed to come with it.

It cuts ok but be prepared to store carefully. I would not put oil in the holder – we’ll be doing what another reviewer said – mannually oiling the chain from now on.

I bought this saw to cut firewood for me and my son. I have several B&D cordless tools that use the same battery that work great, including a line trimmer. I figured with the extra batteries I had, I could cut all the wood I wanted in one session. My intentions was to go out to our city’s brush pile occasionally to cut smaller limbs (around 2-3 inch diameter). My reasoning was to avoid gumming up the carb of a gas chain saw by letting it set for extended periods of time. The first (and only) time I took out my cordless chainsaw, with the chain properly tightened, and oiled, and a fresh fully charged battery, I put the saw to wood on a small, green limb. After nearly 30 seconds of putting as much pressure as I could put on the saw without bogging it down, I cut about a quarter of an inch gash in the limb. Luckily, I bought this saw from a reputable internet dealer who not only allowed me to return it, but also picked up the tab for the return shipping. DO NOT BUY THIS SAW!

This is the first electric chain saw I’ve used – and it will be the last. It took me three days to cut a couple fallen tree branches (15′ long,8″ diameter) into fire logs. Yes…three days. The battery pack lasted just long enough to make about 3 cuts – then it needed to be recharged. My recommendation – if you can handle a gas mower – stick with it. If not, stock up on battery packs – because you’re going to need them for this chainsaw. As for me, I’m going back to gas.

I have used many gas powered chair saws but this is a great tool for all but major jobs. Has very good power and long battery life. I would highly recommend it.

little portable saw for those who don’t want to deal with gas. Works well…it is only 8″so remember that…but it works well for what it is supposed to do. Can’t beat the price either.

    Recommend highly

The buyer must bear in mind that all cordless electric tools have power and stamina limits that gasoline powered units do not. If you need an 18 inch gas saw, get one and stop complaining. A SmartCar cannot race a Shelby Mustang, and is not meant to.

This saw has adequate cutting power for most heavy pruning and similar uses, but if you plan to lop and fell several trees or cut firewood you’ll need several BW cordless tools so that you have enough batteries. Heavy cutting – that is, limbs and trunks four inches or more in diameter – will drain a battery in about fifteen minutes. A hundred 1-1/2″ braches on one battery is optimistic to say the least. You can lop and fell a typical tree with a 6 inch, maybe 8 inch, bole with one battery, maybe, but you’ll need two to be sure. I’ve cut up two 12 inch trees with it but it was difficult and took two days for each tree. If I had a lot of such work to do I would buy a gasoline or propane powered unit with a large bar. However, on light work this saw is excellent, is very light and much quieter than a gasoline saw, less tiring to use, and less trouble to maintain. I plan to buy the pole version shortly, so I guess that means I’m satisfied.

I bought this for cutting wood while camping. I don’t have room to haul much firewood so we normally buy firewood while at a campground or try to find down wood to cut in the surrounding area. Often times, gas powered chainsaws are not allowed within campgrounds so the only options are to use an axe or a handsaw. I’ve now owned this for 2 months and have used it about 12 times. I’ve cut up to 7 inch rounds with no problem. Slower than an corded electric chainsaw but quieter too.

I bought 2 extra batteries and the 1 hour charger. The included charger with this chainsaw takes too long to charge and does not shut off when the charge is complete thus I highly recommend buying the one hour charger (not included with this chainsaw). BTW, the 1 hour charger doesn’t really charge in 1 hour (more like 2 hours) but it will not over charge so is well worth the extra cost.

I can easily cut enough firewood to supply a night of campfire with one battery (typically equivalent to about 3 bundles of firewood if I were to buy it). I figure it saves me about 15 dollars a night while camping since I don’t have to buy the firewood. We normally drag back long pieces of firewood then cut them at the campsite. The chainsaw is very quiet so won’t bother other campers. At one campground that didn’t allow chainsaws, the Ranger came over after seeing me cutting wood with it but he didn’t have a problem after he realized it was so quiet; that, and the fact that I had a blue tarp down on the ground to catch the saw dust. Yeah, there are many campgrounds that either don’t allow wood gathering or have no downed trees to cut on in the surrounding area, but this chainsaw has already saved me quite a bit of money where I have used it.

A note about the batteries. They seem to last longer after a few charge cycles. It seemed that after the first charge the battery didn’t last very long. After about 10 use then charge cycles, It seems they lasted almost 1/3rd longer than they did after the first charge. Make sure you drain the charge of the batteries before recharging.. That is, don’t recharge a half-empty battery as it will degrade the capacity of the battery (since they are NiCad’s). Also, as I said earlier, buy the quick charger as it won’t over charge the battery. NiCad batteries are more finicky than NiMH or Lithium Ion batteries about charge cycles. BTW, there are after market FireStorm equivalent form-factor batteries for this that are NiMH.

I will also mention that I have had no leaking of oil from the oil reservoir. As a matter of fact, when using regular grade chainsaw oil, it does not come out very well even pushing the oil button over and over. I’ve since changed to a thinner oil (5W 20)and works much better AND still no leaking. Black & Decker must have fixed the original problem I’ve read about here regarding leaking of the oil reservoir.

Do not buy this product unless you are already an experienced chain-saw user. The blade comes packed seperaely and must be installed, which takes three hands. Then the tension must be adjusted and oil added. Adjusting the tension is difficult, because they paut the screw right next to the blade, which means you only get about half a turn and then have to withdarw the tool they give you and find the slot in the black screw(hard to see)all over again. In addition, there are no markings about which way to turn the screw for the desired effect.

If you do buy this saw, read the instrctions. They are actually well written, even though it’s hard to perform the tasks described.

The saw seems to have enough power to do its job, but getting it adjusted so that you can use it is difficult and keping it that way for more than a few cuts is much more difficult.

the product works very well, and cuts cleanly, until the battery starts getting low on charge. when the battery is low, the blade starts jamming in the wood and also kicks back more than when fully charged, otherwise it works very well. it is very good in tight quarters, where there is not a lot of room to move around. if you buy this saw get some extra batteries if you are going to cutting for more than 20 minutes.

I picked this up at Lowes as an addition to my collection of Black & Decker 18V tools. Wise choice. I’ve used it to clean up numerous small to medium (up to 8″) limbs around my property and it handles all with ease. I don’t even use my gas powered chain saw any more except for the big stuff. Battery life is more than adequate and its small size makes it really easy to handle. Best of all, my wife can use it. It doesn’t scare her like the gas saw does!

    saw works fine.

as advertised, it will leak oil all over the place where ever it’s left.

after one cycle on the battery – battery is dead and will not take a charge. saw is now worthless.

Great tool for minor cutting. As long as the pieces are 6″ or less it does a great job. I’ve cut through larger pieces but you really have to cut slowly and let the saw work itself through. I highly suggest that you buy an extra battery. The battery is good for small jobs but if you’re cutting firewood (even enough for just one night) youre going to want that extra battery.

wow! the product was fantastic and works extremely fast to get the work down.it’s easy to replace the chain, when it pops off. i have arthritis and it did not put pressure on my joints if you use it as directed, . the limb came down so fast, it surprised me. i would recommend this product for anybody especially single women!

I agree with the other low-raters. This is almost toy-like in its wimpiness. The battery cycle is extremely limited and the chain dulls readily. I would have already returned it if I hadn’t let the return period lapse. I would not buy it again and will think twice before buying another B&D battery-operated item.

I asked to get this product for a christmas gift (as well as the blower) and what a great gift it was! It is easy to put together and maintain. The fact that the battery is interchangeable with other tools which take the same battery is an added plus as well.

    Not a real chain saw
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I would describe the Black & Decker 18V Cordless Chain Saw as a toy if it were any fun at all to use. Unfortunately, it is neither fun to use nor a real chain saw. It will put a nice score on the branch you’re trying to cut, but in the end you’ll have to go get your hand saw to finish the job.

If you need a chain saw, buy a real gas-powered chain saw.

    Good, Dependable Saw

    4.5 stars.

I bought this saw to help me demolish an old building.

I don’t have much use for a chainsaw normally, so I didn’t want to invest hundreds of dollars into a gas saw that would rarely leave my garage. I also needed a saw that wasn’t hampered by a power cord. So this was the perfect choice.

I love it. It slices through 2x4s and 4x4s with ease. It will cut through nails too (though I try to avoid them). It’s also a relatively quiet saw. No need for ear-protection. You’re next-door neighbors won’t even know you’re using it.

My only complaint is that the battery doesn’t last very long–about 30 minutes of steady use. But as other’s have pointed out, you can always slide in a freshly charged battery and keep cutting. Batteries can be pricey though (about half the price of the saw) and they need several hours to charge.

For the annoyance this sometimes causes, I take half a star off my review. Otherwise, I’d rate it a full 5 stars.

The saw itself works fine. It’s easy to set-up and clean. Durable and dependable. Very safe to use.

I’ve sinced used it to do cut down small trees and to prune limbs and I’ve had no problems.

It’s a great saw for small jobs.

    This thing ROCKS!

I have a gas chainsaw, but wanted this battery powered one for small jobs. I figured I’d use it for nothing more than trimming bush branches & little saplings, but I have found that it’s a full-blown chainsaw and quite capable of taking down a 7″ tree with no problem whatsoever. The first time I put it to serious use, I had to take down a fairly large oak tree (7″ diameter) and as usual couldn’t get my gas saw started. So I grabbed the little B&D & a fresh battery and went to it. It went through the tree like a knife through butter! I was very impressed, and now when I need to cut trees, I grab the B&D before anything else. It’s lightweight, easy to maneuver and work with, and will take down anything within the bite of its bar. It just plain rocks!

I think the guys at Black & Decker actually use the tools they make because this saw, like all B&D power tools, is well thought out, well built, and everything on it just makes sense. They have a real winner with this saw.

    I highly recommend it.
