This is a fun tool! I was impressed with how easily it cut through branches and how long the battery lasts. I am really pleased with it.

I’ve had a large pile of sumac branches (non-poisonous) for months in my side yard as a result of some thinning operations earlier this spring. It was very slow progress to hack them apart with a pruning saw and bypass loppers. After seeing the positive reviews, I decided to enlist the aid of the Alligator Lopper for the job. I’m happy to report that it’s making quick work of the mess. I had a minor issue with the chain coming off on me in the first 5 minutes, but I hadn’t adjusted the tension from the factory setting. It does seem to chew through the batteries, but I’m fairly impressed that it runs on an 18V battery in the first place. It really should come with two like the B&D String Trimmer. Overall though I’m pretty impressed as it’s hacking through 4″ branches as advertised and I know the metal chain guards are destined to save me from injury at some point in the future.
Note that you’ll need to buy chain oil separately. Mine came just came with an empty bottle to help with application.

Not quite a lopper, not quite a chain saw but a combination of the two. not as good as I thought for cutting down 7 foot edges but it works. I did use it on a small tree like thing with 4″ branches. It took it apart quite handily. I feel it is a lot safer than a regular chainsaw. IT runs on my existing power source, no dragging around long extension cords makes it a breeze to use. I am now going to buy an 18 volt hedge trimmer. Battery life is acceptable just don’t expect to use it all day without spare batteries. I wish it had an auto oiler.

This is far safer and easier to use than a gas chain saw. As a 60 year old man I really appreciate its lightness and the fact that it is cordless. And this sucker is dirt cheep.

I don’t usually do reviews but I love my alligator chain saw. We have 5 acres and lots of yard work to do. My father has a regular chain saw but I can’t even lift that. Plus, it’s pretty dangerous. I’ve always used hand loppers and a hand saw if I need to cut a tree or branch. It’s tedious work. These things slice through most things under 3 or 4 inches even plants that are hard as a rock like cedar. It’s a little bit heavier than I’d like but I can manage it. I can now prune a butterfly bush with all the hard dead branches in minutes. Adding oil can be a pain but it’s better than having to use gas too. Don’t use it to prune leafy bushes with small pieces as those will jam up and require cleaning it out. Read all the directions. If you have a lot of yard work and need help, you need this. It’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

My wfe and I just completed 6 days of clearing brush around our Utah home and the Alligator earned a place in our hall of fame for useful tools. It worked flawlessly cutting down scrub oak up to 4-5 inches in diameter as well as countless 2-3 inchers. I even tackled one or two Juniper branches that were in the 8-10 inch range.
Other reviews noted that battery life is low and the oiling system is a pain.
Re: battery life. I could cut more than two hours worth of clean up work on one charge. So if you invest in the rapid charger and a second battery you will be in good shape.
The oiling system IS a bit of pain but nothing too bad.
NOTE: Don’t forget to buy chain oil – none is supplied. And the chain oil bottle provided by B&D is lame. Plan on buying your own.

Regular chainsaws scare me. This is great!!! I can cut and trim just about anything in my yard with this. They say it only cuts up to 4″ pieces, but you can go larger just by turning and readjusting the angles of the saw. Don’t know how I lived without one of these. A must have for women/men who like yard work. It works so well I gave my pruner away.

Have badly overgrown shrubs? Want to cut up those limbs and branches from winter and windfall? Once you use this tool, you won’t know how you lived without it. Turn limbs into kindling for my fire pit. As a woman gardner, I was afraid to use a chain saw, but this tool serves as a mini chain saw with excellent safety features. Their electric lopper is on my list for next year!

I haven’t owned a chainsaw before. I wasn’t sure if I need a chainsaw for the light to medium trimmings I am going to do around the yard of our new home. To operate cordlessly and not running gas are two major considerations. I like what the Alligator Lopper does. Again, I can’t compare it to a chainsaw. But it is very easy to use. And it cuts the tree branches effortlessly. The thicker limbs may require some muscle. It is difficult to cut something beyond your height, because your have to raise it high and press the blades together. I *imagine” it would be easier to swing a chainsaw overhead to reach higher places.

This item, Black & Decker NLP1800 Alligator Lopper 18-Volt Cordless Chain Saw, has lots of potential. It cuts the branches well, even fairly thick ones.
The problems: 1) Battey life…easy fix, get a spare battery… 2) requires frequet oiling 3) This is the worst problem I see, but possible a deal break: the top chain guard can very easily get postioned were it rubs the chain, creating wear and eating a whole in the guard..
Overall: I would say worth $75-99, but would not give over $100 for it again untill the above bugs are corrected.
safest power saw I’ve seen

A great little saw. My family and friends have all bee impressed with this little chain saw. And because of the design, It is safe enough for my children (older than 12) to use. Because it is set up like hedge clippers, you do not have to hold, or hold down what you are cutting. As a matter of fact, you have to squeeze both handles, so your hands are always out of the way. And because it grabs from both sides of the work, you do not have to hold anything under your foot. Also,the guards keep the chain out of the dirt (and feet), so it stays sharp much longer than your normal chain saw. I have cut thru 4″ and larger logs regularly.
I have 2 of these, and 10 batteries (I got 3 free batteries thru Amazon promotions!!!) I also have the 8″ pruning chain saw on a pole, and the Grasshog and hedge trimmer on a pole.
The 5th star is missing because the charger is so lame. It should indicate when the charge is full, and when the battery is shot. It only indicates when a battery is in it. not too useful of an indicator. I get about 15 minutes of cutting our of a charge.

I have the 110 volt Alligator Lopper and the electric cord was always in the way.
With the cordless 18 volt Alligator Lopper there is not cord to worry about and it seems to have the same cutting power. This is an outstanding tool.
B&D Alligator Lopper

This is an outstanding tool for cutting branches already on the ground. With a normal chain saw you have to support the wood someway. With this, you just grab on and cut. It’s also much safer than using a conventional chain saw. You have to have both hands on the tool to run it. I normally don’t use a regular chain saw if nobody is around to help if there’s an accident, but I have no reservations of using this tool alone. I now have two of them, one cordless, and the other corded. Replacement saw chains are readily available. Jim Rossi

I am a 64 year old woman with Fibromyalgia. At first I was somewhat intimidated by this tool but once I picked it up to use it for the first time I was amazed at how comfortable I was with using it. It is easy to hold on to and easy to start. I normally have difficulty using my arms but this was light enough. The design is such that I feel more protected from the chain. I also have the blower, the trimmer, and the hedge trimmer. Five batteries came with the four tools. I really like have enough interchangeable batteries so I am never without power. I really recommend this whole line of tools.

This is a great tool. It cuts fast and is very safe. Battery life is pretty good too. I bought an extra battery and am happy I did. I highly recommend it for light to medium duty jobs. It will make quick work of cutting lots of 3″ or smaller limbs and branches.

Cuts limbs, and small trees like a knife through butter. Even clears vines with ease. Cuts trees up to 4″ flush with the ground.
When cutting trees over 3 inches or really tall trees,it’s better to cut it in two segments. Once between chest or waist level to elevate some of the weight to prevent the blade from getting stuck, then once at ground level.
I have two of theses things. Originally bought the corded one which also works great but it hard to reach some of theses trees on my 10 acre.
Item is very well design. The design is very simple and it is very easy to take apart and clean out wood shavings and dislodge vines that occasionaly get stuck in the blade. This tool is also tough. Before I learned how to use it right I got it wedge in a tree trunk trying to get a 4″ tree flush with the ground without cutting it first at chest level to reduce the weight. I then used a tractor to dislodge the tree which ended up bending the tip of the lopper blade. It still cut with a bent blade. I ended up sticking the bent end into a vise and bent it back by hand. Good as new.
One charge of the battery will usually give 10-25 cuts on 1″-4″ trees or limbs. Enough for most people. You can usually buy a Black and Decker drill value set with two batteries for about $69 to give you 2 extra batteries for really big jobs.
